Facts About AutismAutism prevalence rates are growing. Most recent estimate from the Center for Disease Control is 1 in 68 children impacted by an autism spectrum disorder. Autism is almost 5 times more likely to be found in boys, at a rate of 1 in 42 boys. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States.

There is no medical detection or cure for autism. There are 27 different scientifically and research supported treatments for autism and symptoms related to autism spectrum disorder. Autism is present across all races, all economic statuses, and all geographic locations. Worldwide prevalence rates vary.

Autism has a lifetime cost of approximately $1,000,000. Studies have shown that earlier intervention decreases overall lifetime costs.

Risk factors include genetics, though the exact gene or genes are unknown at this time. Siblings have the highest risk of autism within families. Individuals with chromosomal differences are also at the highest risk for autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
